What to Expect During Your First Therapeutic Massage
Booking your first therapeutic massage can feel a little uncertain.
What should you wear? Will the pressure be uncomfortable? What if you don't know exactly how to explain what's bothering you?
If you've never booked before, those questions are completely normal. Here's exactly what your first appointment at Muse Bodywork actually looks like, from booking to walking out the door.
Before Your Appointment
You'll book online and fill out a brief intake form ahead of time. This isn't just paperwork. It gives your therapist a head start on understanding what you're hoping to get out of the session, any relevant health history, and where you've been feeling tension or discomfort.
There's no need to overthink what you write. You don't need the right medical terms or a perfectly clear explanation. "My shoulders have been tight for weeks" or "I'm not totally sure, but my lower back has felt off" are both common things to show up with.
When You Arrive
Muse Bodywork is a private, appointment-only studio, so you won't be sitting in a crowded waiting room. When you arrive, your session starts with a real conversation, not a rush straight to the table.
This is where your therapist asks follow-up questions: where exactly you're feeling tension, how long it's been going on, what makes it better or worse, and what you'd like the session to focus on. This part matters more than people expect. A therapeutic session is built around this conversation, not a routine applied to everyone who walks in.
What to Wear
You'll undress to your comfort level in private before your session begins, and you'll always be properly draped with a sheet, blanket, or both throughout. Many clients wear underwear during their session; some prefer more coverage, and that's completely fine too. Some clients prefer not to undress at all, and that's okay as well. Your therapist will simply adjust the techniques used to meet you where you're at. Your comfort comes first, and you're always in control of what you're comfortable removing.
During the Session
Once you're on the table, your therapist will check in about pressure early on and continue checking in throughout, in a way that fits naturally into the session rather than interrupting it. If something feels too intense, too light, or just not quite right, saying so is encouraged and expected, not awkward.
Depending on what your session is built around, your therapist might use techniques like deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, Stretch Assist, or cupping, whatever fits what your body needs that day. Some areas might get more focused attention than others. There's no fixed routine applied to every session. It's shaped by the conversation you had at the start and how your body responds as the session goes on.
It's completely normal to feel areas of tightness you weren't fully aware of, or to notice that a spot you thought was the main issue isn't actually where most of the work happens.
After Your Session
Most people leave feeling looser. Some areas worked on might feel a little tender for a day, similar to how a new stretch or workout can leave you sore afterward. That's a fairly common response and usually settles within a day or so.
Your therapist may offer suggestions for what to pay attention to over the next few days, like staying hydrated or noticing how a particular area feels as it settles. Everyone's body responds differently, and we can't promise a specific outcome, but most clients have a clear sense by the end of the session of what helped and how their body felt different.
A Few Things First-Timers Often Wonder
- Do I need to know exactly what's wrong before booking? No. "Something feels off" is a completely valid place to start.
- What if I fall asleep? It happens, and it's not a problem. Snoring can happen too, and there's no need to feel self-conscious about it.
- What if I need to ask my therapist to adjust mid-session? That's always okay, any time, for any reason.
- What if I'm nervous about my first appointment? That's normal too, and a quick conversation before you book is always welcome if it helps.
